June In My Flower Garden

 













I am an introvert who seeks recognition, but only a little bit. I live in Southern Wisconsin and yes, I do enjoy cheese and a half-dozen or so beers each year. Somehow I found someone willing to marry me back in 1976, and so far so good. We have children and grandchildren and they are all really something.

Dear Garden Diary

Dear Diary, I can’t believe it has been three months since my last garden blog post. I really can’t believe it. After spending May watering every other day to keep the new plants alive in the dry, windy, 90+ degree heat, the annual Japanese beetle invasion, and the weeds, it’s time now to take a breath. Not that much of a breath, of course. Any vegetable gardener knows that the harvest mostly starts in August around here in Southern Wisconsin, and it’s far from done now. One thing we learned about not cleaning things up right away after harvesting is that some plants – cabbage being one – will give you post-harvest gifts. Little cabbages (the inspiration for the French term of endearment, “Mon petit chou”) arise from the place where the original cabbage was cut. They are tender and mild. Surprisingly, we got to harvest all of our sweet corn, despite nightly visits by various deer. At least one of the deer developed a taste for moss roses and pulled most of them out of the ground....

Creeping Charlie Chapter 13

  You know how horror movies like “Friday the 13 th ” seem to keep piling up sequels that have the same basic plot?   Well, my yard is a horror story, and the bad guy in my movie is a dastardly fellow known as Creeping Charlie.   This may not be the 13 th time I’ve written about Charlie, but I’m sure there will be 13 before it, or I, am gone. Charlie sounds friendly enough.   Everybody I’ve ever known named Charlie was friendly.   And creeping doesn’t sound so bad.   Babies creep before they crawl, right? This Creeping Charlie is a lawn weed.   It is a relative of the mint family, and it doesn’t creep: it dashes.   It is like a lawn vine that silently takes over, eliminating grass and clover and anything else in its way.   I’m not sure, but I think it got a cat, once. The thing about this weed is that it doesn’t really respond well to attempts to kill it.   A dandelion will crumple up and die when the words “Weed B Gone” are utter...

After Season

Every growing season is different; that's for sure. Last year at this time the corn and soybean farmers in our neighborhood in Southern Wisconsin couldn't get into their fields to harvest.  This year it seems like almost everything is picked and in the bins. We have had a normal number of frosts at our place for mid-November, but we've had a lot of nice days too, and by covering up some of the remaining plantings, we've managed to have a pretty good post-harvest harvest. The cabbages we picked a month or more ago sprouted little baby cabbages (not Brussels sprouts) that are nice and tender.  Our Swiss chard, which was cut to the ground, has kept sprouting new leaves, which are nice enough to use in a salad. We've had a few other surprises.  A couple of months ago I posted a photo of a disaster cauliflower in this space.  Little did we know that there were some beautiful cauliflower heads hiding in a couple of plants we had ignored.
